La Paz’s Municipal Sports Department announced the Triatlón Es La Paz on March 29, the first event of the Baja California Sur State Triathlon Series. The race starts at 7:00 a.m. at Playa Stella on the Malecón waterfront, with swim, bike, and run transition zones all based at the same location. Sports director Guillermo Ortalejo Hernández confirmed that registration is now open, with limited spots available.

12 Age Categories From Kids to 60 Plus

The event features 12 age categories spanning from children as young as 6 to athletes over 60. Distances are scaled by age and ability. The mini category covers a 50-meter swim, 1-kilometer bike ride, and 500-meter run. The sprint format, aimed at older teens and adults, includes a 750-meter open-water swim, a 20-kilometer bike course, and a 5-kilometer run.

Capacity is capped at 120 individual sprint entries, 10 team sprint slots, and 75 youth spots. Once those numbers fill, registration closes. Ortalejo Hernández encouraged early sign-ups given the tight limits.

How to Register Online or in Person

Athletes can register online at HUAMDeportiva.com or in person at three La Paz businesses: Thunder Bikes La Paz, Lavarenta La Paz, and the Giulietta y Romeo ice cream shop. No registration fee was listed in the city’s announcement, so interested participants should check the HUAM Deportiva site for current pricing and requirements.

La Paz has become a regular stop on the triathlon calendar. The city also hosted the 2024 Americas Triathlon Cup, a World Triathlon event held near Marina Palmira on the Carretera Escénica. That international race drew elite athletes from across the hemisphere. The March 29 event, by contrast, is a community and youth-focused race organized by the municipality.

Playa Stella sits along the southern stretch of the Malecón, the city’s 5-kilometer seaside promenade popular with runners, cyclists, and walkers year-round. Race-day road closures along the Malecón are likely, though the city has not yet published a traffic plan. The 2025 Americas Triathlon Cup La Paz is also scheduled for later this year at the Kiosco Malecón area, according to the La Paz municipal government website.
