Baja California Sur’s state government inaugurated a new pedestrian walkway at the linear park along Bordo “El Cajoncito” in La Paz’s La Rinconada neighborhood on March 22. Secretary General José Saúl González Núñez led the opening ceremony, which doubled as a community cleanup operation ahead of the 2026 hurricane and rainy season.

Flood Prevention and Public Space in La Rinconada

The walkway at El Cajoncito linear park was built by JEC (the Baja California Sur State Road Authority). La Rinconada sits in a low-lying area of La Paz that has historically faced flooding during hurricane season, which runs from June through November. Bordos, or flood levees, channel stormwater runoff away from residential streets.

The cleanup and construction effort cleared debris and vegetation from vulnerable drainage areas along the bordo. By maintaining these channels before the rains arrive, the state aims to reduce the risk of flash flooding in surrounding colonias. La Paz recorded significant storm damage during Hurricane Norma in October 2023, when flooding displaced thousands across the city.

State Plans to Expand Park Projects Across BCS

The walkway project falls under the state’s “Peace and Civic Justice Council” strategy, which targets public space recovery in all five of Baja California Sur’s municipalities: La Paz, Los Cabos, Comondú, Mulegé, and Loreto. González Núñez said similar interventions will be replicated statewide, with local residents playing a role in ongoing maintenance of the improved spaces.

La Rinconada is located in the southern portion of La Paz, roughly two miles from the Malecón waterfront. The neighborhood has seen steady residential growth in recent years but has fewer public gathering spaces compared to colonias closer to the city center. The new walkway provides a paved pedestrian path along the bordo’s edge, creating a designated space for walking and recreation.

State officials emphasized that the dual-purpose approach, combining flood infrastructure maintenance with community park development, allows limited budgets to address both safety and quality of life. González Núñez also led a broader cleanup brigade in La Rinconada during the March 22 event, with volunteers clearing trash and overgrown areas near the bordo, according to the Baja California Sur state government.
