La Paz will host a beach cleanup at Playa La Posada on Saturday, March 22, starting at 8 a.m. as part of the statewide “Ola Azul” (Blue Wave) initiative. The event is one of more than 13 simultaneous cleanups planned across Baja California Sur’s five municipalities, coordinated by Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the organization Clean Up BCS.
Statewide Effort Spans 13 Coastal Communities
The Blue Wave campaign is part of Mexico’s 2025 to 2030 National Strategy for Beach and Coastal Cleaning and Conservation, which aims to eliminate plastic pollution from the country’s beaches by 2030. Cleanup sites on March 22 include San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, Los Barriles, Todos Santos, El Pescadero, San Juanico, Puerto San Carlos, El Sargento, La Ventana, Loreto, Isla Magdalena, Santa Rosalía, and Guerrero Negro.
In La Paz, organizers plan to target environmentally sensitive areas including mangrove zones such as La Eréndira Beach and the El Conchalito shoreline. Cabo San Lucas and Punta Arenas will host underwater cleanups in coordination with local diving groups and marine associations.
Clean Up BCS Has Mobilized Over 10,000 Volunteers
Claudia Padilla, director of Clean Up BCS, has called the Blue Wave a citizen-led movement aimed at reshaping the public’s relationship with the coastline. Her organization has mobilized more than 10,000 volunteers through previous cleanup efforts and hopes to surpass participation levels from 2024.
Playa La Posada sits along the coast road northeast of downtown La Paz, past the Malecón waterfront and before the turnoff toward Pichilingue and Balandra. La Paz officials are calling for families, youth groups, and organized community teams to volunteer. Participants should bring reusable water bottles, wear comfortable clothing, and bring gloves.
The March 22 event begins at 8 a.m. across all participating communities statewide, according to the La Paz municipal government.
