A judge in Mexicali formally charged a man identified as Rubén “N” after he allegedly shot and killed a German Shepherd with a rifle at a home in Ejido Islas Agrarias A, a rural community in the Mexicali Valley.
The incident occurred on May 5, when emergency services received a call reporting an injured dog at a residence on Calle Benjamín Magaña. Municipal police and animal welfare officers responded to the scene.
Owner Heard Gunshot, Found Dog Wounded
When officers arrived, they met the dog’s owner, who told them she had heard a loud noise. She went to her neighbor’s property and found her German Shepherd, named Spark, wounded. The suspect was reportedly still at the scene holding a rifle.
Despite the emergency response, the dog died from its injuries. Authorities escalated the case to criminal prosecutors, who brought animal cruelty charges against Rubén “N.”
Second Animal Cruelty Case in Mexicali This Month
A control judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to formally bind the suspect to trial, a step in Mexico’s criminal process known as “vinculación a proceso.” This legal stage means the accused will face a full criminal proceeding, though it does not constitute a conviction.
The case is the second high-profile animal cruelty incident in Mexicali in May 2026. On May 1, a separate suspect was arrested after security cameras recorded him stabbing a four-year-old dog named Honey to death in the city. That dog had eight puppies, which were placed under the care of Mexicali’s Animal Control Department.
Ejido Islas Agrarias A sits in the agricultural flatlands southeast of downtown Mexicali, an area familiar to travelers heading toward San Felipe on Highway 5. The community is home to farming families and scattered residential properties.
Animal cruelty is a criminal offense under Baja California state law, carrying potential prison time depending on the severity of the act. The case was first reported by Semanario Zeta.
