A motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon after losing control on a curve of the free Rosarito-Tijuana highway near the Cuesta Blanca subdivision. The rider was heading north toward Tijuana when the crash occurred on May 9.
Unofficial reports indicate the motorcyclist was traveling at excessive speed when he skidded out on the curve. The rider’s body came to rest on the central median, while the motorcycle, bearing Baja California plates, was thrown several meters ahead along the roadway.
Traffic Backed Up for Kilometers
The crash forced major traffic delays along Boulevard Olivos Norte as forensic investigators processed the scene. Backups stretched for multiple kilometers while authorities worked to document the accident and clear the road.
The free highway between Rosarito and Tijuana is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the region. Thousands of commuters, residents, and visitors use it daily as an alternative to the toll road (cuota). The stretch near Cuesta Blanca is known for its winding curves, which have been the site of previous accidents.
A Dangerous Stretch With a History
This is not the first fatal motorcycle crash on the Rosarito-Tijuana corridor. In September 2025, another motorcyclist died near Real del Mar on the same highway after a separate single-vehicle accident. That section of road, located just a few kilometers north of Saturday’s crash site, has similar curves and elevation changes.
The free road runs roughly parallel to the coastal toll highway but passes through hillier terrain with tighter turns. Speed limits are frequently ignored on the route, and street lighting is limited in several sections between the two cities, which are about 20 kilometers apart.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victim. The Baja California state attorney general’s office (FGE) and forensic investigators responded to the scene. This story was first reported by Jornada BC and Periodismo Negro.
