Cabo San Lucas authorities have shut down Plaza Puerto Paraíso, the marina-front shopping mall at the center of the tourist zone, after inspectors found structural deficiencies and non-functional fire suppression systems. The XV Ayuntamiento (municipal government) of Los Cabos ordered the closure on April 8 following a joint inspection by Civil Protection and the Fire Department.
The inspection recorded six separate safety incidents at the mall during April alone. Inspectors identified structural problems, fire suppression equipment that did not work, and emergency protocols that failed to meet municipal standards. All operations inside the mall have been suspended until further notice.
No Fines Yet, But Reopening Requires Full Compliance
Authorities said they will not issue fines immediately. Instead, the municipality plans to hold advisory sessions with tenants to explain the deficiencies and outline what must be corrected. Reopening is conditional on full safety compliance and certified emergency systems throughout the complex.
This is not the first safety scare at Puerto Paraíso in recent months. In January, the Chedraui Selecto supermarket inside the mall was shut down after a gas leak forced the evacuation of roughly 600 employees and visitors. The Fire Department and Civil Protection responded to that incident as well.
A Major Disruption to Cabo’s Tourist Core
Plaza Puerto Paraíso sits directly on the Cabo San Lucas Marina, between Plaza Bonita and the Marina Fiesta Resort. The multi-level complex houses dozens of shops, restaurants, a cinema with 10 screens, a casino, a bowling alley, and parking for 2,000 vehicles. It also serves as the annual venue for the Los Cabos International Film Festival.
The closure affects every business inside the mall. Visitors heading to the marina area should be aware that the complex is off-limits until authorities certify that all safety systems meet code. No timeline for reopening has been announced.
The shutdown was first reported by Colectivo Pericú.
