CESPM, Mexicali’s public water and sewer utility (Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Mexicali), announced temporary water shutoffs and a major road closure affecting three neighborhoods on Wednesday, April 9.

The largest disruption will hit Calzada Independencia, where westbound lanes between Boulevard Carranza and Calle Cuarta will be fully closed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Crews will excavate a concrete valve box serving 20-inch water mains. Drivers who use this busy corridor should plan alternate routes for the full 10-hour closure window.

Neighborhood Water Shutoffs

In Nuevo Mexicali, water service will be cut from 9 a.m. to noon on Río Santa Cruz, Río Santa María, Río del Carmen, and Río Ameca streets. Workers will replace a 4-inch valve during the three-hour window.

Residents of Villa Florida face a longer outage. Water will be off from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. near Río Champotón and Abelias streets while crews connect 8-inch and 10-inch water lines to the existing system.

What Residents Should Do

CESPM is advising residents in all three affected areas to store water in advance. The utility recommends filling containers the night before to cover drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene needs during the shutoffs.

Mexicali regularly faces infrastructure maintenance work as the city upgrades aging water lines. The region is classified as high risk for water scarcity, with droughts expected roughly every five years, according to the World Bank’s ThinkHazard tool. Keeping the distribution network in working order is a priority for CESPM, particularly during the hot months when demand spikes.

For the Calzada Independencia closure, CESPM did not specify detour routes. Drivers heading westbound between Boulevard Carranza and Calle Cuarta should allow extra time or use parallel streets to avoid the work zone. The closure is scheduled to wrap up by 7 p.m.
