Baja California Sur has reported zero active measles cases after all 15 confirmed patients were treated and discharged, the state Health Secretariat announced. No new infections have been identified, and health authorities say containment measures in Los Cabos successfully halted the virus’s spread.

Twelve of the 15 cases were concentrated in Cabo San Lucas, where officials established quarantine cordons and deployed epidemiological containment teams. The remaining three cases appeared elsewhere in the state. Every patient has since recovered and been released from medical care.

Vaccination Campaign Reaches 74,500 Residents

State health brigades have administered more than 74,500 vaccine doses to residents between six months and 49 years old. Door-to-door outreach teams continue working across the state’s five municipalities to boost immunization coverage. The campaign targets both children who missed routine vaccinations and adults who may lack protection.

The effort in BCS comes against the backdrop of a severe national measles outbreak. Across Mexico, roughly 15,000 cases and more than 35 deaths have been reported since the outbreak began in 2025. That nationwide crisis made the local containment effort in Los Cabos particularly urgent, given the region’s heavy flow of domestic and international travelers.

What the Containment Looked Like in Cabo

Health officials in Cabo San Lucas moved quickly once the first cases were identified, setting up quarantine perimeters around affected areas. Epidemiological teams traced contacts and monitored close contacts of confirmed patients for the 21-day measles incubation window. The strategy proved effective: all 12 Cabo San Lucas cases were contained without secondary chains of transmission spreading to La Paz or other communities.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known, spreading through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. Two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine provide roughly 97% protection, according to global health authorities. Travelers to Baja California Sur, particularly those with young children, should verify their vaccination records before arriving.

BCS Stands Out in National Context

The state’s clean slate stands in sharp contrast to the ongoing national crisis. While other Mexican states continue to report active transmission, BCS has effectively returned to pre-outbreak conditions. Health officials said brigades will remain active and continue vaccinating residents to prevent any resurgence.
