The Los Cabos city council on Monday authorized a supervision contract worth up to 4 million pesos (roughly $200,000 USD) to oversee ongoing renovation work at the Teatro Miguel Lomelí Ceseña in San José del Cabo. The contract covers technical, administrative, and safety monitoring of construction at the theater, located in the Mauricio Castro neighborhood near the town’s historic center.

Federal Ramo 28 funds will pay for the oversight contract, which represents 3.8 percent of the total project budget. That puts the full theater renovation cost at approximately 105 million pesos ($5.25 million USD). The Teatro Miguel Lomelí Ceseña has been a focal point of cultural life in San José del Cabo, and its renovation has drawn attention in recent months as part of a broader push to develop cultural infrastructure in Los Cabos.

Futsal Court and Other Approvals

Council members also approved an additional 2.9 million pesos (about $145,000 USD) in federal funding to rehabilitate a futsal court in the Jacarandas neighborhood of Cabo San Lucas. Both projects draw on federal budget allocations channeled to the municipality.

In a separate vote, the council reversed a land donation to IMSS (the Mexican Social Security Institute) in the Puerto Nuevo subdivision. The 1,870-square-meter municipal lot had been approved for transfer in November 2025 to build a childcare center. The reversal means the planned facility in Puerto Nuevo is now in limbo, though the council did not publicly explain the reason for the change.

Development Plan Update

The session also included an update to the 2024-2027 Municipal Development Plan, the document that guides public spending priorities and infrastructure goals across the municipality for the current administration’s term.

The theater renovation comes at a time when cultural space in San José del Cabo is under discussion. A September 2025 report noted plans for a new Los Cabos Cultural Center, with some observers raising questions about how the project could affect the future role of the Teatro Miguel Lomelí Ceseña. Monday’s vote confirms the municipality is moving forward with the existing theater’s renovation rather than abandoning it.
