The small farming community of Miraflores launched festivities marking 40 years since its promotion from a sub-delegation to a full municipal delegation within Los Cabos. Municipal delegate María Aremy García García led a ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick off the anniversary events in the town, located about 40 kilometers northeast of San José del Cabo at the foothills of the Sierra La Laguna.
The celebration included a cycling ride organized by INDEM (the municipal sports institute), a local artisan market, a classic car show hosted by the Chanos 4×4 club, and a live music performance by Julio Castillo. Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez supported the festivities and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting development and culture in the delegation.
From Sub-Delegation to Full Delegation in 1986
Miraflores was officially established as a delegation of Los Cabos in 1986, giving it greater administrative standing within the municipality. Last year’s 39th anniversary ceremony, led by municipal secretary general Alberto Rentería Santana, included the inauguration of restoration work on the community’s multi-use auditorium and its Casa de Cultura.
The town traces its roots to the Santiago Mission’s farmlands and was reportedly founded around 1700 by French settlers. Today it is home to roughly 3,000 residents, many of whom commute to San José del Cabo for work. Miraflores sits about 220 meters above sea level, with year-round freshwater streams fed by the Sierra La Laguna range.
A Rural Side of Los Cabos
The community is known for its handmade leather goods, organic produce, and the bright pink pitahaya fruit harvested from towering cardón cacti each July. For roughly 30 years, the town has held an annual Pitahaya Fair to celebrate the harvest. Local producers also make chorizo and dried beef that are distributed across Baja California Sur.
Miraflores includes six sub-delegations in the surrounding countryside. The area offers a contrast to the resort corridor, with palm groves, ranching culture, and small restaurants serving traditional food. The town is accessible via the Transpeninsular Highway, about a 45-minute drive from San José del Cabo’s airport.
More community events are expected as the anniversary celebrations continue. Originally reported by the Los Cabos municipal government at loscabos.gob.mx.
