TIJUANA – Medical tourism in Baja California now generates approximately $2 billion annually, with Tijuana accounting for the majority of that revenue as the region’s dominant healthcare hub. An estimated one million medical tourists visit Tijuana each year, drawn by procedure costs that run 40% to 70% lower than equivalent care in the United States, according to data from the Baja Health Cluster, a consortium of hospitals, clinics, and medical tourism facilitators based in the city.

The sector’s growth is concentrated in dental work, bariatric surgery, cosmetic procedures, and orthopedic care. A dental crown that costs $1,200 to $1,500 in San Diego typically runs $350 to $500 at accredited Tijuana clinics along the Avenida Revolucion medical corridor and the Zona Río hospital district. Bariatric sleeve gastrectomy, one of the most popular procedures for American patients, averages $4,500 to $6,000 in Tijuana compared to $15,000 to $25,000 in the U.S. without insurance. Major facilities include Hospital Angeles Tijuana in Zona Río, Oasis of Hope Hospital on Paseo Playas de Tijuana, and the cluster of dental clinics near the CECUT cultural center.

Tijuana’s proximity to the San Diego border crossing gives it a unique advantage over other Mexican medical tourism destinations. Patients can fly into San Diego International Airport, cross at PedWest or San Ysidro, and be in a Tijuana hospital room within an hour. Many clinics provide free shuttle service from the border and arrange recovery accommodation at partner hotels in Zona Río, where bilingual staff cater specifically to American patients.

The Baja Health Cluster maintains a directory of accredited providers at bajahealthcluster.mx, and patients are advised to verify that any clinic holds certification from Mexico’s Consejo de Salubridad General (CSG), the national healthcare accreditation body. The cluster also operates an English-language concierge line that helps patients coordinate travel, procedures, and follow-up care across the border.
