Los Cabos will equip six of its most popular beaches with 24/7 video surveillance cameras mounted on lifeguard towers, according to Rafael Álvarez Munguía, director of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT). Mayor Christian Agúndez is expected to inaugurate the new security cameras in the coming days.
The six beaches receiving camera-equipped towers are Playa El Médano, Santa María, El Chileno, Palmilla, Acapulquito, and Las Viudas. Together, those beaches draw more than one million visitors per year.
Cameras Join a Growing Security Network
The initiative builds on years of surveillance expansion in Los Cabos. Playa El Médano, the busiest tourist beach in Cabo San Lucas, already had 24 cameras installed in 2023 through a partnership between the Medano Businessmen’s Association and municipal police. Those cameras fed into a centralized monitoring station. The new program extends that concept to five additional beaches along the Tourist Corridor and the San José del Cabo coastline.
In January 2026, the Los Cabos city council also acquired industrial-grade DJI Matrice 350 RTK drones equipped with infrared and thermal imaging. Those drones are used for both law enforcement and search-and-rescue operations, including locating swimmers in distress and lost hikers at night. Five certified municipal pilots are completing their licenses with Mexico’s Federal Civil Aviation Agency to operate the aircraft.
Lifeguards and Beach Staff Also Part of Plan
The camera rollout is not a standalone measure. ZOFEMAT said the lifeguard towers will be staffed by certified lifeguards and information personnel alongside the surveillance equipment. The agency also cited ongoing beach cleanup and debris removal efforts as part of a broader push ahead of the busy tourism season.
Los Cabos has been rated the fourth-safest city in Mexico by a study covering 75 municipalities, based on data from the National System of Statistical and Geographical Information. The municipality currently deploys more than 1,700 security personnel during peak holiday periods, and it added 50 new municipal police officers as part of its 2025-2026 staffing expansion. Major lighting upgrades have also been completed in tourist zones and the Cabo San Lucas marina.
