Registration is open for the second annual Student Day 5K race in La Paz, organized by the Baja California Sur state government. The race takes place May 28 at 6 p.m., starting and finishing at the malecón kiosk, and registration closes May 20.
The event is a joint effort between ISJuventud (the state youth institute) and INSUDE (the state sports agency). It is free for students aged 12 to 29 enrolled in secondary school, preparatory school, or university. An open category for participants aged 30 and older costs 350 pesos (about $18 USD), payable as a donation at authorized COMEX paint store locations.
Categories and Prizes
Runners compete in four categories: secondary, preparatory, university, and open. All participants receive a commemorative kit that includes a shirt, medal, and race number. Top finishers in the student categories can win cash prizes of up to 5,000 pesos (roughly $260 USD).
The race doubles as a community project. Last year’s inaugural edition drew more than 600 participants and collected 144 liters of paint. Organizers used that paint for mural projects at local sports venues across the state.
How to Register
Students can sign up at no cost through the ISJuventud website at isjuventud.bcs.gob.mx. The deadline is May 20. Runners in the open category must pay their 350-peso donation at a COMEX location before registering.
The malecón kiosk, the race’s start and finish line, sits along La Paz’s waterfront promenade, a familiar route for the city’s running community. The 6 p.m. start time places the race in the cooler early evening hours, a common choice for late-May events in the Baja California Sur capital, where daytime temperatures often exceed 30°C (86°F) by that time of year.
