The Baja California Sur state Congress will host a shore fishing tournament on May 17 at Playa Palizada in La Paz, with all proceeds going to a local center that serves people with disabilities.
The inaugural “Unidad Laboral” tournament, organized by members of the XVII Legislature, will raise funds for CAM Laboral 13 “María Dolores Cervantes Atilano.” CAM Laboral (Centro de Atención Múltiple) is a special education and job training center that prepares people with disabilities for the workforce. Organizers described the institution as being in ongoing need of support.
Registration, Entry Fee, and Prizes
Registration opens May 16, either online or in person at Playa Palizada. The entry fee is 350 pesos (about $18 USD) per participant. The competition is open category, meaning anglers of all skill levels can enter.
A guaranteed prize pool of 60,000 pesos (roughly $3,100 USD) will be split among the top three finishers. First place takes 30,000 pesos ($1,550 USD), second place earns 20,000 pesos ($1,030 USD), and third place receives 10,000 pesos ($520 USD).
Shore Fishing on the Bay of La Paz
Playa Palizada sits along the Bay of La Paz, north of the city’s main malecón. Unlike the offshore tournaments that dominate the Baja California Sur fishing calendar, this event is strictly shore fishing, requiring no boat and no expensive gear. That format keeps the barrier to entry low and fits the community fundraising spirit of the event.
The tournament coincides with Mexico’s Labor Day period. May 1 is the official Workers’ Day holiday, and organizers timed the event to extend that spirit of solidarity into mid-May. Unions, community associations, and local media have all been invited to participate.
Baja California Sur hosts dozens of fishing tournaments each year, from the multimillion-dollar Bisbee’s Black and Blue in Cabo San Lucas to smaller community events across the peninsula. The Unidad Laboral tournament adds a charitable twist to that tradition by directing funds toward disability services rather than sport fishing purses alone.
