Los Cabos municipal officials finalized security and traffic plans for the Ironman 70.3 triathlon scheduled for April 26, coordinating more than 12 city departments to manage road closures, hospital capacity, and athlete safety across the resort corridor.

Alberto Rentería Santana, general secretary of the XV City Council of Los Cabos, led a planning session with Ironman Los Cabos director Mauricio Zavala Alonso. Rentería Santana said the goal is to keep disruptions to traffic as limited as possible while protecting both athletes and the general public.

Race Route Spans San José del Cabo and the Tourist Corridor

The 113-kilometer course begins with a 1.9-kilometer open-water swim at Palmilla Beach, followed by a 90-kilometer cycling leg and a 21.1-kilometer run. Previous editions routed the bike segment along the coastal highway (Transpeninsular Highway) between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, with lane closures and rolling traffic controls throughout the day.

Residents and visitors along the tourist corridor and in San José del Cabo should expect significant road closures on race day. Specific closure maps and schedules have not yet been released, but officials urged motorists to stay informed as the date approaches.

Three-Year Absence Ends With $25,000 Prize Purse

The race marks Ironman’s return to Los Cabos after a three-year hiatus. The XV City Council settled outstanding debts from prior administrations to reactivate the franchise. About 1,800 athletes, both national and international, are expected to compete. The professional category carries a $25,000 USD prize purse.

The event is a centerpiece of the municipality’s sports tourism strategy. Past Ironman weekends have brought a surge in hotel bookings, restaurant traffic, and transportation demand across both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

What Expats and Travelers Should Know

Race day will bring rolling closures on key stretches of the tourist corridor highway and through San José del Cabo. Those with early flights or scheduled tours on April 26 should plan extra travel time or arrange transportation the evening before. Drivers heading between the two Cabos may face detours lasting several hours during the cycling portion of the race.

The municipal coordination meeting included representatives from public safety, transit police, civil protection, and hospital administration. Officials said a detailed traffic plan with alternate routes will be published before race day.

The race logistics were first reported by the Los Cabos municipal government and Radar Político.
