More than 1,350 athletes from 40 countries hit the water at Playa Palmilla on Sunday morning for the IRONMAN 70.3 Los Cabos, marking the triathlon’s return to the destination after a three-year absence. The race began at 6:00 a.m. and was scheduled to wrap up around 3:00 p.m. with an awards ceremony led by municipal president Christian Agúndez Gómez.

The half-IRONMAN distance (70.3 miles total) includes a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run. About 90 athletes from Baja California Sur competed, with more than half of them from the Los Cabos municipality itself. Many of the local participants were aiming to qualify for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

Local Officials Coordinated Security and Traffic Plans

Alberto Rentería Santana, secretary general of the XV Ayuntamiento de Los Cabos, represented Mayor Agúndez Gómez at the event. Rentería Santana said the municipality had closely tracked the race’s logistics since organizers first approached city hall. He noted that access for spectators was free.

Elton Emmanuel Olachea Arce, director of the Los Cabos Municipal Sports Institute (INDEM), called attention to the strong showing by local athletes. Olachea Arce said he was confident the hometown competitors would represent Los Cabos well on an international stage.

Road Closures and Alternate Routes in Effect

City officials asked residents and visitors to consult official traffic maps before heading out Sunday. The Palmilla beach parking lot had been closed since April 21 for setup. A comprehensive security operation involving municipal agencies and race organizers was deployed to protect participants, families, and spectators along the course.

The race returned to Los Cabos after a three-year hiatus. Pre-event coordination meetings between the organizing committee and local security forces took place throughout the week leading up to Sunday, with the final planning session held on April 22. Officials said events of this scale generate significant economic benefits for hotels, restaurants, and other businesses across the tourism corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
