State prosecutors in Baja California Sur arrested five men on active judicial warrants between April 22 and 25, carrying out operations in Cabo San Lucas, La Ribera, La Paz, and San José del Cabo. The suspects face charges including aggravated homicide, rape, drug possession, and property damage.

The Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado (PGJE), the state attorney general’s office, carried out the arrests over a four-day span across the southern half of the peninsula. Some operations involved coordination with prosecutors from Mexico City, indicating that at least one suspect was wanted in the capital.

Arrests Span Four BCS Communities

The locations of the arrests covered a wide geographic range. Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, the twin cities that form the Los Cabos tourist corridor, were each the site of at least one apprehension. La Ribera, a small community on the East Cape roughly 60 miles northeast of Cabo San Lucas, was another arrest location. The state capital of La Paz, about 100 miles north of Los Cabos, also saw at least one operation.

All five men had outstanding warrants issued by judges, meaning their cases had already moved past the investigation stage. Charges of aggravated homicide and rape are among the most serious offenses under Mexican law. Drug possession and property damage charges applied to other detainees.

Arrests Came During a Tense Week in BCS

The arrests took place during the same week that Baja California Sur experienced a broader security crisis. The U.S. Embassy issued a security alert on April 25 citing a shootout across several Cabo San Lucas neighborhoods that same day, three passenger buses set on fire in La Paz and Los Cabos on April 24, the killing of a law enforcement officer and three other homicides on April 22, and cartel threats posted against public officials.

Canada also issued its own travel advisory for the region during the same period. The federal Security Ministry (SSPC) announced the arrest of four additional men in connection with the bus burnings, along with the seizure of seven firearms.

The PGJE did not specify whether the five warrant arrests were connected to the broader wave of violence or were the result of separate, ongoing investigations. Warrant operations of this kind are routine law enforcement activity, though executing them during a period of heightened tension required additional coordination.
