Filmmaker and academic Pablo Martínez Zárate will present a free 60-minute live cinematic performance at Tijuana’s Antiguo Palacio Municipal on Saturday, April 18, at 1 p.m. The event, titled “Impressions on Colonialism: Notes on an Unfinished History,” closes Iberoamericana University Tijuana’s 2026 Communications Week and is open to the general public at no charge.
The performance blends personal narrative, historical footage, sound design, and live storytelling to explore how colonial structures continue to shape contemporary life. Martínez Zárate performs the piece live, making each showing a unique experience rather than a standard film screening.
International Premiere History
The work has already appeared on international stages. It premiered in English at the Salzburg Kunstverein in Austria and in Spanish at DocsMX 2025, one of Mexico’s most prominent documentary festivals. The Tijuana showing marks a chance for local audiences to see a piece that has drawn attention in European and Mexican cultural circuits.
The performance takes place in the Sala Audiovisual of the Antiguo Palacio Municipal, the former city hall building in downtown Tijuana. The historic venue sits in the heart of the city’s civic center, a short walk from Avenida Revolución and easily accessible from the San Ysidro border crossing.
Communications Week Wraps Its Ninth Year
Iberoamericana University Tijuana has held Communications Week annually since 2018. Over the years, the event has brought major figures in Latin American culture, media, and filmmaking to speak and perform at the private university’s campus and partner venues around the city. This year’s closing event at the Antiguo Palacio Municipal moves the programming into a public space, broadening its reach beyond the student body.
No tickets or reservations are required. Attendees can simply arrive at the Sala Audiovisual before the 1 p.m. start time on April 18.
