Thirteen teams hit the water in Cabo San Lucas Bay on April 11 for the fourth annual Bulnes Fishing Tournament, competing for more than 300,000 pesos (roughly $15,400 USD) in prizes and jackpots. The charity event benefits the volunteer Cabo San Lucas Fire Department.

Carlos Castro Ceseña, director general of Social Development for the Los Cabos municipal government, represented Mayor Christian Agúndez at the starting signal. He was joined by Cabo San Lucas municipal delegate Karina de la O Uribe and municipal fisheries director Juan Javier García.

Officials from FONMAR (the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism), led by director Martín Inzunza, also attended. CFE (the Federal Electricity Commission) superintendent Juan Carlos Butterfield was present, along with representatives from the Mexican Navy, ASIPONA (the port authority), and the Harbor Master’s office. Members of the Bulnes family participated in the opening ceremony.

Honoring Luis Bulnes and Supporting Firefighters

The tournament honors the memory of Luis Bulnes, described by organizers as a generous community leader in Los Cabos. A portion of proceeds will go directly to the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department to improve emergency response equipment and services.

In previous years, tournament funds have paid for urban rescue equipment and uniforms for firefighters. The money has also supported a firefighter boat project called “AINA,” a vessel expected to respond to emergencies and fires along the Cabo San Lucas coastline once it enters service.

Tournament Details and Competition Format

Team registration took place on Friday, April 10, with the starting signal sounding at 7 a.m. Saturday in the bay. The competition targets species including marlin, tuna, and dorado. Organizers enforce conservation rules, including catch-and-release requirements for billfish that do not meet minimum size standards.

Both national and international teams are competing in this year’s field of 13 boats. The event has grown since its first edition and organizers had hoped to surpass 30 registered vessels this year.

The Bulnes tournament is one of several charity fishing competitions held annually in Los Cabos, a region that hosts dozens of sport fishing events each year. The tournament was first reported by the Los Cabos municipal government at loscabos.gob.mx.
