Professional baseball returned to Cabo San Lucas on April 23 when the Bucaneros de Los Cabos opened the 2026 Liga Norte de México season at the Leonardo Gastélum Villalobos stadium. The Bucaneros hosted the Huracanes de La Paz in the inaugural series, marking the first Liga Norte action in Los Cabos since 2022.
The Liga Norte de México is a professional baseball circuit featuring six teams from Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sonora. Other clubs in the 2026 season include the Barbanegras de Tijuana, Marineros de Ensenada, Algodoneros de San Luis Río Colorado, and Tiburones de Puerto Peñasco. The season is expected to span roughly 66 games.
Stadium Upgrades and Municipal Support
The Los Cabos municipal government backed the return through its sports institute, INDEM (Instituto del Deporte Municipal). Stadium improvements include new seating, a scoreboard, and a video screen. José María Jarquín Herrera, representing Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez, said the government maintains a permanent commitment to baseball and sports development in the municipality.
League officials noted that previous Liga Norte seasons drew more than 52,500 fans across the circuit. The municipal government views the league as a way to strengthen community identity and position Los Cabos as a regional sports destination.
Local Players Anchor the Roster
Club president Iván Ahumada said the Bucaneros have assembled a competitive roster with the goal of contending for the championship. Four homegrown players from the Los Cabos area are on the squad. Ahumada described the Liga Norte as a platform for young talent to develop toward higher levels of professional baseball.
The Huracanes de La Paz are newcomers to the circuit, joining the league for the first time in 2026. La Paz had been expected to enter the league in 2025, but the timeline was pushed back a year.
For fans in Cabo San Lucas, the Leonardo Gastélum Villalobos stadium is located in the city center. Game schedules and ticket information have not yet been widely published online.
