The Instituto Sudcaliforniano de Cultura (ISC), Baja California Sur’s state cultural institute, will present a new editorial collection featuring eight works by local authors on Friday, July 10 at 6:00 p.m. in La Paz. The free event takes place in the Archaeological Garden of the Regional Museum of Anthropology and History, located in the city’s historic center.

The BCS literary collection spans fiction, legend, and cultural history. It includes titles such as “La noche larga del huracán Liza” (The Long Night of Hurricane Liza) and “Donde el tiempo se detiene: Leyendas de Todos Santos” (Where Time Stands Still: Legends of Todos Santos). Hurricane Liza struck La Paz in 1976, killing hundreds and reshaping the city’s development. Todos Santos, a small town about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas, has long attracted artists and writers.

Authors to Discuss Their Creative Process

The participating writers will discuss how they developed their works and take questions from the audience. The ISC organized the collection to promote Baja California Sur’s homegrown literary talent and make it more accessible to the reading public.

Eight titles make up the collection, though the ISC has not yet released the full list of authors or remaining book titles. The works cover a range of genres rooted in the peninsula’s geography, history, and oral traditions.

Event Details and Location

The Regional Museum of Anthropology and History sits on Calle 5 de Mayo at Altamirano in downtown La Paz. Its Archaeological Garden is an open-air courtyard used regularly for cultural programming. The museum itself houses artifacts from the peninsula’s indigenous Pericú and Guaycura peoples, along with exhibits on the colonial mission era.

Admission to the July 10 presentation is free. No registration is required. The event begins at 6:00 p.m., a time that allows for cooler evening temperatures in La Paz, where July daytime highs regularly exceed 100°F (38°C).
