Gunmen killed two men inside Frutería Rodríguez in Tijuana’s Colonia Castillo on Wednesday morning, April 8. The shooting took place shortly before noon at the fruit shop located on Avenida Venustiano Carranza near Calle M, in the city’s Zona Centro district.
Emergency services received the call at approximately 11:37 a.m. Multiple armed individuals entered the business and opened fire. Both victims died at the scene.
One Victim Reportedly Managed the Shop
According to an unofficial account reported by Agencia Fronteriza de Noticias, one of the two men killed was the shop’s manager. Authorities have not publicly identified either victim. El Imparcial placed the shop’s location more precisely between Avenida Venustiano Carranza and Avenida Libertad in Colonia Castillo.
Municipal police and state investigators responded to the scene and cordoned off the area. The motive for the attack has not been disclosed. No arrests have been announced.
Tijuana’s April Homicide Count Reaches Nine
The double killing brought Tijuana’s homicide count for the first eight days of April to nine, according to Semanario Zeta. The attack fits a pattern of targeted daytime shootings in commercial spaces that has persisted in the city for years.
Colonia Castillo sits in Tijuana’s central corridor, a few blocks south of the Zona Río commercial district and roughly one mile from the San Ysidro border crossing. The area is a mixed residential and commercial neighborhood with heavy foot traffic during business hours.
Tijuana has consistently ranked among Mexico’s most violent cities. The municipality recorded more than 1,500 homicides in 2024, though state authorities have said the figure represented a modest decline from prior years. Most killings are attributed to organized crime disputes, and attacks on small businesses often involve targeted victims rather than random violence.
Investigators from the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state attorney general’s office, are handling the case. No further details were immediately available.
