State investigators in Baja California Sur arrested two men on April 13, executing outstanding warrants for armed robbery and rape in separate operations spanning Los Cabos and La Paz.
José Luis, 39, was apprehended near kilometer 34 of the Transpeninsular Highway in the Guaymitas area of San José del Cabo. He faced an active arrest warrant for armed robbery allegedly committed in La Paz. The stretch of highway where he was detained connects the two largest population centers in the state and is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in BCS.
Second Arrest in La Paz
Hours later, agents detained Miguel Ángel, 27, at the intersection of Calle México and Calle General Lorenzo Núñez Avilés in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood of La Paz. He was wanted on suspicion of rape and aggravated domestic violence. The Emiliano Zapata neighborhood sits in a residential area of the state capital.
Both operations were carried out by investigators from the Agencia Estatal de Investigación Criminal (AEI), the state criminal investigation agency. The arrests resulted from follow-up work on open case files with filed complaints.
Suspects Brought Before Judges
After their detention, both suspects were placed before control judges to determine their legal status. Under Mexico’s criminal justice system, a control judge must decide within 48 hours whether to formally charge a suspect or order their release. The hearings determine if prosecutors have enough evidence to proceed with formal proceedings.
The AEI regularly conducts warrant operations across the peninsula, targeting suspects with pending arrest orders in both Los Cabos and La Paz municipalities. These coordinated efforts are part of standing enforcement protocols in which investigators track suspects who may have fled from one city to another within the state.
BCS authorities did not release the full names of either suspect, following Mexican privacy protocols that limit the publication of accused individuals’ surnames before a formal sentencing. The cases were first reported by Colectivo Pericú.
