The Los Cabos municipal government launched semiannual certification audits at 27 beaches across the municipality on April 14, starting at Playa El Médano. The two-week inspection process will determine which beaches retain their Playa Platino (Platinum Beach) certification, Mexico’s top national standard for beach quality.
Rafael Álvarez Munguía, head of the local ZOFEMAT (Federal Maritime Land Zone) office, announced the audits. The Mexican Institute of Standardization and Conformity Evaluation (IMEEC) is conducting the inspections at locations spread across the Los Cabos coastline.
What the Audits Cover
Inspectors test ocean water for enterococcus bacteria levels, a key indicator of contamination risk for swimmers. They also interview beach cleaning crews, review environmental program documentation, and monitor the health of coastal ecosystems at each site.
The timing is deliberate. Álvarez Munguía said the municipality is prepared for evaluation following the high-traffic Spring Break and Semana Santa periods, when beaches absorb heavy visitor use. The goal is to assess conditions and address any problems before the next audit cycle.
A Growing Track Record
Los Cabos has aggressively pursued beach certifications in recent years. The municipality earned 22 new Platinum Beach certifications in late 2025, awarded by IMEEC at the Fifth Sustainable Beaches Meeting in Cancún. The destination also held 25 Blue Flag beaches at the end of 2025, the most in Mexico, with plans to add 11 more in 2026 for a total of 36.
Beaches that pass the current round of audits will maintain their certified status. Those that fall short will face pressure to correct deficiencies before the next semiannual evaluation. The Platinum standard covers water quality, cleanliness, safety infrastructure, and environmental education programs.
What It Means on the Ground
For beachgoers, certified status serves as a practical indicator. Platinum and Blue Flag beaches must meet verified standards for clean water, trained lifeguards, designated swim areas, and maintained restrooms. Popular certified beaches include Playa El Médano, Chileno, and Santa María.
IMEEC will compile results from all 27 inspections into a final report once the two-week audit period concludes. The Los Cabos municipal government published the announcement on its official website, loscabos.gob.mx.
