Two men were formally charged and ordered held in pretrial detention in San José del Cabo after separate arrests on illegal possession of military-grade firearms, part of a broader crackdown following a deadly weekend of violence in the Los Cabos corridor.
Baja California Sur State Police detained the first suspect, identified as José, on Calle Juriquilla in Colonia Monte Real. Officers seized a rifle, two magazines, two rounds, five homemade explosive devices, and a property at the scene. In a separate operation, the second suspect, Marco, was spotted armed on a rooftop in the Playa San José del Cabo area. He was arrested with two firearms, 169 cartridges, and eight magazines.
The Federal Attorney General’s office confirmed both men were formally bound over for trial with preventive detention. Prosecutors have a three-month window for supplemental investigation.
Follow-Up Raids Reveal Cartel Infrastructure
Subsequent operations tied to both cases produced a staggering list of seized items. Federal ministerial police and SEDENA (Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense) recovered a live tiger, 47 tactical plate carriers, 62 ballistic plates, six radios, three gram scales, two money-counting machines, two cell phones, and additional magazines. The equipment is consistent with cartel logistics operations.
The State Security Task Force confirmed the two suspects are believed linked to the armed group that opened fire on military personnel on May 30. That confrontation on the Transpeninsular Federal Highway north of Los Cabos killed a 31-year-old American bystander from California and wounded seven others, including two Mexican soldiers, a 14-year-old boy, and a 65-year-old woman who suffered serious leg injuries.
U.S. Consulate Issues Security Alert
The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana issued a security alert for citizens traveling to or living in Los Cabos following the violence. The diplomatic post noted at least two security incidents near San José del Cabo International Airport, the primary arrival point for tourists visiting the region. While the clashes occurred outside traditional tourist zones, the consulate warned that large numbers of Americans transit through the airport daily.
The Baja California Sur State Security Task Force announced it will increase the presence of federal forces in both San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. A separate raid on a safe house in Colonia Oasis yielded two additional long guns in .223 and .50 caliber, tactical gear, and a Suburban-type vehicle. Authorities also arrested a suspect from Mexicali at that location.
The charges and seizures were first reported by Colectivo Pericú and confirmed by El Sudcaliforniano and La Jornada.
