State security agents arrested two men linked to a criminal cell after they were spotted walking armed along the Mexicali-Tijuana toll highway near Tecate on Sunday evening, June 7. Officers from the Proteo 4-25 rapid reaction unit, part of the Fuerza Estatal de Seguridad Ciudadana (FESC), responded to reports of gunshots near Colonia Rincón Tecate and located the pair around 7:50 p.m.
One suspect, identified as Sergio Adrián, 26, who goes by the alias “Kimoll,” was carrying a SIG SAUER rifle with a loaded magazine in his backpack. The second suspect, Daniel Obed, 45, had two 9x19mm rounds in his pocket. Both men fled on foot before officers apprehended them on Calle 13 de Septiembre, a residential street in the Tecate area.
Suspects Tied to Cartel Hit Squad
Authorities identified both men as members of a hit squad targeting rival criminal groups. They were turned over to the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), Mexico’s federal prosecutor’s office, in Tijuana on weapons charges.
The Mexicali-Tijuana toll highway is a major corridor connecting Baja California’s two largest cities. The route passes through the Tecate municipality, about 30 miles east of Tijuana and roughly 100 miles west of Mexicali. Many travelers use it as an alternative to the free highway or as a route to the Tecate border crossing into California.
Security Climate in the Tecate Corridor
The arrest comes months after a period of intense security operations across Baja California. In February 2026, the state went on “Red Code” alert following the death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” That event triggered vehicle burnings and store closures in Tijuana, Mexicali, Tecate, Ensenada, and San Quintín. The National Guard and Mexican Army deployments that followed have remained in place.
Tecate has seen periodic flare-ups of cartel activity as rival groups contest territory in the border region. The FESC’s Proteo units serve as rapid reaction forces deployed specifically to address organized crime activity across Baja California’s highways and rural areas.
The weapons charges filed with federal prosecutors carry significant penalties under Mexican law. Possession of military-grade firearms, such as the SIG SAUER rifle recovered in this case, is a federal offense in Mexico.
