A Dangerous Stretch of Highway

The section of Highway 1 between Santa Rosalía and Heroica Mulegé is well known to drivers as a challenging corridor. The El Chiri curve at km 194 features a sharp alignment that has been the site of repeated accidents over the years. Heavy commercial trucks hauling agricultural products between the Baja California Sur farming regions and northern destinations frequently travel this route.

Santa Rosalía sits roughly 60 kilometers north of the town of Mulegé on the Sea of Cortez coast. Travelers driving between Guerrero Negro and Loreto pass through this section regularly, and the road includes several steep grades and tight turns with limited shoulder space.

Authorities Renew Speed Warnings

Following the crash, local authorities renewed warnings about obeying posted speed limits and maintaining full attention on this federal highway. Overloaded trucks and excessive speed have been cited as contributing factors in past rollovers on the same stretch.

Drivers heading south toward Loreto or north toward Guerrero Negro should exercise extra caution near km 194, especially when driving at night or during windy conditions common along the Gulf coast. The Transpeninsular Highway remains the only paved route connecting Baja California Sur’s central desert towns, so closures from accidents like this one can cause significant delays.
