Tijuana Municipal Police arrested a 31-year-old man on Friday after linking him to at least five break-ins at the same Farmacias Roma branch in the Miramar neighborhood. The suspect, identified as Jorge Luis, allegedly targeted the pharmacy repeatedly over a two-month span, smashing the front glass with rocks at night to steal merchandise and cash.
The break-ins occurred on May 13, May 22, June 17, and July 5, with a fifth incident reported by pharmacy staff. In each case, Jorge Luis allegedly shattered the storefront glass after hours, entered the premises, and took goods and money before fleeing.
Meth Possession Led to the Arrest
Officers on patrol spotted Jorge Luis near the corner of Del Valle and Paseo de la Montaña in Colonia Laureles on Friday afternoon. When he noticed the patrol, he dropped a plastic bag containing crystal methamphetamine. That possession charge triggered his immediate detention.
Police then turned him over to state prosecutors at the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the Baja California state attorney general’s office. The handover came with the evidence from all five pharmacy robberies.
Five Complaints, No Warrant
The arrest exposed a gap in property crime prosecution. Farmacias Roma staff had filed complaints after each break-in and provided photographs and other evidence to authorities. Despite five separate reports, no arrest warrant had been issued for Jorge Luis before Friday’s encounter. His detention ultimately came because of the drug possession, not the robbery complaints.
Farmacias Roma operates multiple locations across Tijuana and is a common stop for residents filling prescriptions. The Miramar branch sits in a residential area southeast of downtown, close to several neighborhoods popular with long-term residents.
Smash-and-grab burglaries at pharmacies and small retail shops remain a persistent problem in Tijuana’s residential zones. Repeat offenses at the same location are less common but point to limited overnight security at some storefronts and slow follow-through on property crime investigations.
Jorge Luis now faces both drug possession and robbery charges with state prosecutors. The case was first reported by Punto Norte.
