A collision between a personnel transport bus and a white Volkswagen Jetta killed three people and injured several others on Sunday night along the highway near San José del Cabo.
The crash occurred around nightfall on July 5 at kilometer 046+900 of the highway in the Mesa de Santa Anita area, a stretch of road regularly used by residents and visitors traveling between Los Cabos communities. The impact left the Jetta completely destroyed.
Victims Identified
Authorities preliminarily identified two of the dead as Fredi, 19, and Alejandro, 29. A third victim, a woman estimated to be between 25 and 30 years old, had not been identified as of Monday. All three fatalities were occupants of the Jetta.
Several other people were injured in the collision. Authorities have not released the total number of injured or their conditions.
Investigation Underway
National Guard units secured the crash scene Sunday night. The Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) deployed forensic specialists to process the site, and medical examiners transported the bodies for autopsy.
Investigators from the state’s specialized traffic crimes unit opened a formal probe to determine the cause of the collision and assign legal responsibility. The PGJE has not released further details about the circumstances of the crash, including which vehicle may have been at fault.
A Dangerous Corridor
The highway near Mesa de Santa Anita sits along the main road connecting San José del Cabo to other communities in the Los Cabos municipality. The two-lane stretches of this route have been the site of previous fatal accidents, particularly at night when lighting is limited.
Baja California Sur officials have previously called for enhanced National Guard patrols along Los Cabos highways to improve safety. The state has also pushed for construction of a dedicated National Guard headquarters in the region.
