La Paz municipal police arrested a 20-year-old man carrying approximately 12 grams of crystal methamphetamine on March 19 after officers spotted him acting evasively on Calle Artículo 115 in the Ayuntamiento neighborhood. The suspect, identified as Jafet “N” and originally from the state of Veracruz, was detained following a preventive search. Authorities estimated the seized drugs could yield roughly 300 individual doses.

Citizen Reports Led Officers to Ayuntamiento Neighborhood

Officers said the arrest resulted from a combination of citizen tips and police intelligence work in the area. Patrol units had been monitoring the Ayuntamiento neighborhood, a residential colonia located south of La Paz’s downtown core near the city’s municipal government offices.

When officers approached Jafet “N” on foot, they noted his attempts to avoid contact. A preventive search then turned up the crystal methamphetamine on his person. Police took him into custody without incident.

Suspect Turned Over to State Drug Prosecutors

Authorities transferred Jafet “N” to state prosecutors from FGE (Baja California Sur’s state attorney general’s office) who specialize in drug trafficking cases. Under Mexican law, possession of more than a small personal-use amount of methamphetamine triggers drug distribution or trafficking charges. The threshold for personal use in Mexico is set at just 40 milligrams, so 12 grams far exceeds that limit.

The Ayuntamiento neighborhood sits roughly 10 blocks south of the Malecón waterfront, an area popular with visitors and residents alike. Calle Artículo 115 runs through a mostly residential stretch of the colonia, close to local schools and small businesses.

Crystal methamphetamine remains the most commonly seized drug in Baja California Sur. La Paz police have conducted several similar street-level operations in recent months, often acting on anonymous tips from residents. State authorities have emphasized the role of citizen reporting through the 911 emergency line as a tool for targeting low-level distribution networks in the capital city.

Prosecutors have not yet announced formal charges against Jafet “N,” and no court date has been set, according to Colectivo Pericú.
