Specialized narcotics agents raided a drug house in downtown Cabo San Lucas on March 18, arresting a 38-year-old man and seizing marijuana and crystal methamphetamine from the residence. The operation targeted a retail narcotics point known locally as a “narcotienda,” where drugs were packaged and sold in small quantities.
Suspect Detained With Drugs, Scales, and Cash
The suspect, identified as Jhonatan “N,” also known as “El Yona,” was detained inside the residence after a judge authorized the search warrant. Agents recovered approximately one kilogram of marijuana, which authorities estimated at roughly 2,000 individual doses, and 37 grams of crystal methamphetamine, equivalent to about 925 doses.
Officers also seized a cellphone, digital scales, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The items are consistent with street-level drug distribution rather than large-scale trafficking.
Mexican Navy personnel provided perimeter security during the raid, a common protocol for narcotics operations in Los Cabos. The operation began after authorities received an anonymous tip about drug sales at the location.
Los Cabos Leads Baja California Sur in Drug Cases
The bust fits a pattern of street-level enforcement in the municipality. Los Cabos accounts for more than 63 percent of all drug dealing cases under investigation in Baja California Sur, according to data from Mexico’s National Public Security System (SESNSP). In April 2024, federal agencies including PROFECO (Mexico’s federal consumer protection agency) and the Navy launched investigations into bars and nightclubs in Los Cabos after tourists filed complaints about open drug sales.
Downtown Cabo San Lucas, where the March 18 raid took place, sits just blocks from the marina and the bar district along Boulevard Marina. Retail drug operations in residential neighborhoods have been a persistent target for state and municipal police in recent years, with authorities conducting periodic sweeps based on anonymous tip lines.
Jhonatan “N” faces state charges related to drug possession with intent to distribute. He was transferred to the FGE (Baja California Sur’s state attorney general’s office) for processing, according to Colectivo Pericú.
