President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged 300 million pesos ($16.7 million USD) in emergency health funding for Baja California Sur during a July 13 visit to La Paz, where she inaugurated a new hemodynamics room at the IMSS Bienestar “Juan María de Salvatierra” Specialty Hospital. Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío voiced his support for the president at the event, held at the La Paz Convention Center, calling her a partner in improving welfare for Baja California Sur residents.

The 300 million pesos in health spending will cover new operating rooms, a CT scanner, five mobile medical units, and a new health center in Vizcaíno, a remote town in the Mulegé municipality roughly 450 miles north of Los Cabos. The hemodynamics room will allow doctors to treat cardiovascular patients in La Paz rather than transferring them to mainland Mexico.

Sheinbaum acknowledged problems with pharmaceutical supply during her remarks, blaming delays on a recent federal drug procurement dispute. “We had some problems with the medication tender because once again the pharmaceutical companies tried to get clever,” she said, adding that the issue had been corrected.

Water, Transit, and Highway Projects Also Announced

Beyond health care, federal officials outlined a broader infrastructure package. CONAGUA (Mexico’s national water commission) director Efraín Morales López confirmed that the El Novillo Dam project in La Paz will receive 800 million pesos ($44.5 million USD) to increase the city’s drinking water supply. In Loreto, a 75 million peso ($4.2 million USD) rehabilitation of the wastewater treatment plant will serve more than 18,000 residents. Los Cabos will also get upgraded wastewater treatment to stop untreated discharge into the bay.

Jesús Antonio Esteban Medina, head of the federal transportation ministry (SICT), announced 409 million pesos ($22.7 million USD) in 2025 road investments for BCS, with 612 million pesos ($34 million USD) planned through the rest of the presidential term. Projects include 100 kilometers of repairs on Highway 1 (the Transpeninsular Highway), a vehicle underpass in Los Cabos, and bridge rehabilitation across the state.

La Paz will also receive 30 new public buses and a redesigned transit system featuring a central hub in the Camino Real neighborhood, five feeder routes, and four transfer points. That project carries a 55 million peso ($3.1 million USD) price tag for buses plus 2.5 million pesos ($139,000 USD) for fare collection and security technology.

Sheinbaum’s visit was her fourth to the state. Protesters from IMSS Bienestar and local transportation unions greeted her outside the venue, pressing demands over working conditions and sector disputes. Castro Cosío committed to continuing dialogue with transportistas, according to Semanario ZETA.
