Mexicali police arrested a 38-year-old man identified as Jesús Alberto early Friday morning after he pulled a loaded 9mm Ruger pistol on officers during a routine traffic stop. The suspect, who authorities say belongs to a criminal group operating in the Mexicali Valley, fled the scene and led officers on a vehicle chase before being stopped near Boulevard Periférico Manuel Gómez Morín.

Officers took Jesús Alberto into custody and later executed a search warrant at an address linked to the suspect. Inside, they found a tactical vest, loaded ammunition magazines, vehicle documentation, vehicle identification holograms, cocaine, and four stolen vehicles: three Honda Civics and a Jeep Rubicon bearing California license plates with irregular serial numbers.

Suspect Linked to January Shooting

Investigators connected Jesús Alberto to a shooting that took place in January in the Villas del Rey subdivision in Mexicali. Authorities have not released details about victims or charges related to that earlier incident. He was turned over to the Baja California state attorney general’s office (FGE) for prosecution.

Two women found at the address, ages 19 and 14, were also detained for allegedly obstructing officers during the search. Both were brought before a municipal judge. The 14-year-old’s case will be handled under juvenile proceedings.

Cross-Border Vehicle Theft Remains a Concern

The seizure of a California-plated Jeep Rubicon with altered serial numbers points to the ongoing problem of cross-border vehicle theft in the Mexicali corridor. The city sits directly south of Calexico and the Imperial Valley, making it a frequent destination for vehicles stolen in Southern California. Tampered VIN holograms, like those found in this case, are a common tool used by theft rings to re-register stolen cars for resale in Mexico.

Mexicali police have made similar busts in recent years. In April 2024, officers arrested four people believed to be part of a vehicle theft ring operating in the same region.

The presence of a tactical vest, loaded magazines, and cocaine alongside the stolen vehicles suggests the operation extended beyond car theft. Authorities have not named the specific criminal group to which the suspect allegedly belongs.
