A man was killed by gunfire on the afternoon of May 1 in Ejido Héroes de la Independencia, a rural community in the Valle de la Trinidad delegation roughly 100 kilometers east of Ensenada. The shooting was reported at 5:42 p.m. near kilometer 93+500 of the Ensenada highway, outside the town limits.
Officers from the Fuerza Estatal de Seguridad Ciudadana (FESC), Baja California’s state security force, responded to the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified the victim or released details about a suspect or motive.
A Pattern of Deadly Violence in Valle de la Trinidad
The killing is the latest in a string of fatal shootings that have struck Valle de la Trinidad in recent months. On April 24, an armed attack in the nearby Ejido Santa Rosa left one man dead and a woman injured by gunfire. That woman was rushed to a clinic in Ensenada for emergency treatment.
Also in late April, an armed confrontation between civilians and military personnel near Ejido Tribu Kiliwas and Arroyo de León, both in the Valle de la Trinidad area, killed one man and left a woman wounded. A woman was detained in connection with that incident, according to Semanario ZETA.
On March 28, four men were shot and killed on the main street of Colonia Lázaro Cárdenas in the town of Valle de la Trinidad itself. In October 2024, a mass shooting in the same area left five dead and eight injured on the Ensenada-San Felipe highway.
Remote Area Poses Law Enforcement Challenges
Valle de la Trinidad sits about an hour’s drive from downtown Ensenada along a two-lane highway that connects the Pacific coast to the San Felipe corridor. The delegation’s isolation means slower emergency response times and a thinner law enforcement presence compared to urban areas closer to the coast.
The Ensenada-San Felipe highway passes through the region. Travelers driving between the two cities, including expats and tourists heading to San Felipe or the Sea of Cortez, regularly transit this stretch of road.
No arrests have been announced in connection with the May 1 shooting. The investigation remains in early stages.
