Federal prosecutors have charged a man identified as Juan “N” with firearms and drug offenses after a police chase through downtown Loreto, Baja California Sur. Officers patrolling the town center spotted the suspect behaving evasively and attempted a traffic stop, which led to the pursuit.

Once detained, police searched the vehicle and seized a pistol, two loaded magazines, seven rounds of ammunition, and roughly 73 grams of methamphetamine. Authorities estimated the drugs were equivalent to approximately 1,831 individual doses. Officers also recovered a digital scale and 265 pesos (about $14 USD) in cash.

Federal Charges and Preventive Detention

The Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), Mexico’s Federal Attorney General’s Office, presented the case through its Baja California Sur regional unit. A control judge ordered Juan “N” held in preventive detention and bound over for prosecution on both firearms and drug distribution charges.

The judge set a three-month timeline for the complementary investigation phase. Under Mexico’s federal criminal justice system, this period allows prosecutors to build their full case before trial proceedings begin. The suspect will remain in custody during this phase.

Loreto’s Small-Town Profile Belies Drug Activity

Loreto, a town of roughly 20,000 residents on the Sea of Cortez coast, is known primarily for its mission church, national marine park, and growing expat community. The town sits about 350 kilometers north of La Paz along the Transpeninsular Highway. It draws sport fishers, kayakers, and retirees, and its small international airport connects to several U.S. cities.

The quantity of methamphetamine seized, nearly 1,831 doses according to federal calculations, points to distribution-level activity rather than personal use. The digital scale found with the drugs is commonly cited by prosecutors as evidence of intent to sell.

Federal law enforcement has maintained patrol operations across Baja California Sur’s smaller coastal towns in recent years, not only in larger population centers like La Paz and Los Cabos. This arrest took place in the town’s central district, the commercial and tourist core near the historic mission.
