A federal judge in Baja California has formally charged a man identified as José “N” after police discovered 700,000 compressed fentanyl pills and nearly 11 kilograms of fentanyl powder hidden inside a vehicle in Mexicali.

Mexicali municipal police and federal security agents detained José “N” at the intersection of Boulevard Gómez Morin and Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas, two major thoroughfares in the city. Officers found a hidden compartment in a vehicle the suspect was about to board. Inside were five sacks containing the pills and powder.

Hidden Compartment Pointed to Organized Trafficking

The use of a concealed vehicle compartment points to organized trafficking infrastructure rather than low-level distribution. Mexico’s Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), the federal attorney general’s office, is prosecuting José “N” for drug crimes involving possession of fentanyl with intent to sell.

A federal judge ordered preventive detention, meaning José “N” will remain in custody while the case moves toward trial. Under Mexican law, drug trafficking offenses involving fentanyl qualify for mandatory pretrial detention.

Seizure Ranks Among Baja California’s Largest

The 700,000-pill haul is one of the larger fentanyl seizures reported in Baja California in recent months. For scale, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, as few as two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal depending on body size and tolerance. A single counterfeit pill typically contains between 0.5 and 5 milligrams of the drug.

Mexicali, located directly across the border from Calexico, California, has been identified repeatedly as a transit point for fentanyl moving north. In 2023, the DEA investigated a Mexicali-based trafficking organization that shipped tens of thousands of fentanyl pills into the U.S. Midwest. That case resulted in a federal conviction and a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence handed down in June 2025.

Mexico Steps Up Fentanyl Enforcement

The arrest comes as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has prioritized combating fentanyl trafficking. In December 2024, Mexican soldiers seized over a ton of fentanyl in Sinaloa in what officials called the biggest catch of the synthetic opioid in the country’s history. Just last week, authorities in Ciudad Juárez arrested three people, including an American citizen, with 110,000 fentanyl pills.

Boulevard Gómez Morin runs through Mexicali’s eastern corridor, an area familiar to residents and travelers heading toward the San Felipe highway. Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas is one of the city’s main east-west arteries. The intersection sits in a commercial zone with regular police presence.
