Police in La Paz arrested a 47-year-old man Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly robbed an elderly woman at knifepoint in the Colonia Guerrero neighborhood, a residential area west of the city center.
The suspect, identified as Juan Pablo, reportedly approached 68-year-old Juana Yolanda on the street, threatened her with a knife, and snatched her purse. The woman was knocked to the ground during the struggle.
Foot Chase Ends in Quick Arrest
Security officers on patrol in the area witnessed the incident and gave chase on foot. They caught Juan Pablo a short distance from the scene, still carrying the stolen purse and the knife used in the attack.
Juana Yolanda received attention after the incident. Her purse was recovered and returned to her. The entire episode, from the robbery to the arrest, took only minutes.
Armed Robbery Charges Filed
Authorities turned the case over to the Ministerio Público, Mexico’s public prosecutor’s office, where Juan Pablo faces armed robbery charges. Under Mexican federal law, armed robbery carries significantly harsher penalties than simple theft, with sentences that can reach over a decade in prison depending on the circumstances.
Colonia Guerrero sits in a central part of La Paz, near markets and shops where residents regularly run errands on foot. The neighborhood is not typically considered a high-crime area, but street robberies targeting pedestrians, particularly older residents, do occur across the city.
La Paz officials urged residents to report crimes immediately by calling local emergency numbers. The quick response in this case was attributed to active patrol units already positioned in the neighborhood at the time of the robbery.
