Mexicali municipal police arrested a 24-year-old man Thursday morning after he allegedly tried to run over a coworker’s partner with a car and then beat him at Parque Industrial Cosmo in eastern Mexicali.
The suspect, identified as Gibrán Jared, allegedly drove a red Toyota Corolla at the 41-year-old victim in the industrial park. When the vehicle failed to strike the man, Gibrán Jared got out and physically attacked him, according to police reports.
Victim Found With Serious Injuries
Officers responded to the scene after receiving an alert from the C5 emergency monitoring system, Mexicali’s network of surveillance cameras and emergency dispatch centers. They found the victim on the ground with visible facial injuries, wounds across his body, and a dislocated right shoulder.
The attack reportedly stemmed from a personal dispute connected to a coworker’s romantic partner. Authorities have not released further details about what triggered the confrontation.
Suspect Faces Assault Charges, More Possible
Police took Gibrán Jared into custody at the scene and transferred him to the González Ortega substation in Mexicali. He faces initial assault charges, though investigators said additional charges could follow as the case develops. Using a vehicle as a weapon could elevate the case to attempted homicide, as prosecutors in Baja California have pursued in similar incidents.
Earlier this month, the Baja California State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) secured an indictment against a separate suspect for attempted aggravated homicide after a man allegedly ran over a victim with a vehicle in Mexicali’s Colonias Nuevas area on May 24.
Parque Industrial Cosmo is one of dozens of maquiladora and manufacturing parks in Mexicali, located in the city’s industrial corridor. The parks employ thousands of workers and are generally considered low-crime areas. No fatalities were reported in Thursday’s incident.
