A control judge in Los Cabos ordered former police supervisor Edilberto “N” to stand trial for aggravated femicide in the March 11 shooting death of 24-year-old Citlali “N,” a fellow municipal police officer. The ruling, issued March 19 at the Centro de Justicia Penal de Los Cabos in San José del Cabo, also imposed preventive detention without bail.
Shooting Occurred Inside Police Facilities in San José del Cabo
Citlali, a municipal police agent, was shot inside Los Cabos police facilities during an interaction with Edilberto, who held a supervisory role over her. She was transported to a hospital but died from gunshot wounds. Prosecutors from the PGJE (Baja California Sur’s state attorney general’s office) presented evidence gathered over eight days during the continuation of the initial hearing.
Edilberto is described in official statements as an “ex mando policial,” or former police commander. Under Mexican law, aggravated femicide carries a sentence of 40 to 60 years in prison. The aggravated classification applies when the perpetrator held a position of authority or trust over the victim.
State Attorney General Affirms Zero Tolerance Policy
Baja California Sur’s attorney general stated that the investigation followed strict scientific protocols and incorporated a gender perspective, a legal framework Mexico requires in cases involving violence against women. The office reaffirmed a zero tolerance policy regardless of the accused’s institutional rank.
Los Cabos, the municipality that includes both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, has faced repeated scrutiny over femicide cases. The fact that both the victim and the accused were active members of the municipal police force adds an unusual dimension to a case already drawing statewide attention.
Edilberto will remain in custody at a state detention facility while the trial proceeds. No trial date has been publicly announced, according to Colectivo Pericú.
