A fire tore through a residential area near Colonia López Obrador in Cabo San Lucas on Sunday night, destroying seven homes and displacing 13 families. The blaze left 36 people without shelter, including 12 children and one person with a physical disability.
Residents reported the fire around 9 p.m. Thirty firefighters with six units responded to the scene. The fire burned roughly 3,200 square meters before crews brought it under control. No injuries or deaths were reported.
Flames Spread to Nearby Businesses
Beyond the seven destroyed homes, the fire also damaged a recycling facility, a mechanic’s shop, and several vehicles. A junkyard adjacent to the fire zone was nearly reached by the flames before firefighters stopped the spread. The dense, informal layout of the neighborhood contributed to the rapid advance of the blaze.
Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez went to the scene personally to coordinate the emergency response. The municipal government arranged immediate assistance for the affected families through its XV Ayuntamiento (municipal council) offices.
All Families Placed With Relatives
All 13 displaced families found shelter with relatives, so the city did not need to open emergency shelters. Cleanup and debris removal crews were scheduled to begin work on Monday morning at the site.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have said preliminary findings point to an accidental origin, though a formal determination has not yet been made.
Colonia López Obrador sits in a working-class area of Cabo San Lucas, west of the downtown tourist corridor. Informal construction and close spacing between structures in neighborhoods like this one make fire containment especially difficult once flames take hold. The December 2024 landfill fire in Cabo San Lucas, which burned thousands of tons of waste and sent smoke across the city for days, was a recent reminder of fire risk in the municipality.
