The Los Cabos Municipal Health Institute launched a free month-long spay and neuter campaign for dogs and cats, with mobile veterinary brigades visiting neighborhoods across San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas throughout May.
The campaign began May 5 in the Los Cangrejos neighborhood of Cabo San Lucas. That same location will host return visits on May 13, 20, and 27, along with the Tierra y Libertad neighborhood on those same dates.
Full Schedule for San José del Cabo
On the San José del Cabo side, clinics follow a different weekly rotation. Pablo L. Martínez hosts on May 7, Santa Anita on May 14, Santa Catarina on May 21, and San Bernabé on May 28. Each clinic also administers free rabies vaccinations.
Residents must book an appointment in advance via WhatsApp at (624) 240-6945. Appointments open at 8:00 a.m. on the day of each clinic.
Why It Matters in Los Cabos
Baja California Sur government officials have estimated that roughly 500,000 stray animals roam Los Cabos, according to a 2024 report. Private veterinary clinics in the area typically charge between 1,500 and 3,000 pesos (roughly $80 to $160 USD) for a spay or neuter procedure, making government-run free clinics a significant resource.
The municipal program targets specific colonias where stray animal populations and pet overpopulation are most acute. Nonprofit organizations like Casa Sheila Animal Welfare and the Baja California Spay Neuter Foundation also run sterilization drives in the region, but the government campaign adds capacity during what is traditionally one of the busiest breeding seasons.
How to Sign Up
Pet owners should send a WhatsApp message to (624) 240-6945 to schedule their appointment. Only the neighborhood listed for a given date will be served that day, so residents should confirm the correct location and time before arriving. Both dogs and cats are eligible for the free procedures.
