Baja California Sur prosecutors confirmed that a 36-year-old man found dead at a motel in San José del Cabo on April 4 died from drug intoxication, ruling out foul play in the case.

The state Attorney General’s office (PGJE, Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado) completed forensic analysis that found no internal or external injuries consistent with violence or third-party involvement. The body was discovered around midday at a motel on the corner of Yeneka and Florezca streets in the San Bernabé neighborhood.

Forensic Findings Rule Out Foul Play

San Bernabé is a residential neighborhood in San José del Cabo, located inland from the Hotel Zone and the tourist corridor that connects the city to Cabo San Lucas. The area sits roughly two miles north of the downtown art district and is home to many local workers in the Los Cabos tourism industry.

PGJE investigators said scientific testing confirmed drug intoxication as the sole cause of death. Authorities did not release the man’s name or nationality.

Investigation Remains Open

State prosecutors said they will continue scientific and legal investigations to ensure full transparency in the case. No further details about the type of substance involved have been made public.

The incident comes as drug overdose deaths remain a concern across Los Cabos. In recent years, reports have surfaced of contaminated street drugs circulating in the region, with some substances testing positive for fentanyl and methamphetamine used as fillers in recreational drugs.

In June 2023, two Americans were found dead in a hotel room in El Pescadero, a community between Todos Santos and Los Cabos, with gas inhalation listed as the suspected cause of death in that case.
