Police in Mexicali arrested a 47-year-old man on Friday morning after his 53-year-old sister was found dead with multiple dog bite wounds in the city’s Colonia Nacozari neighborhood. The man, identified as Carlos, is the owner of the dogs believed to have attacked the victim, Aída.
Officers detained Carlos during a patrol sweep near the crime scene after discovering a 17-centimeter knife in his possession. He was transferred to Central Command with support from state security forces and is being held on a prohibited weapons charge.
Cause of Death Still Under Investigation
The Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state attorney general’s office, has not yet ruled on the cause of Aída’s death. Investigators are working to determine whether the dogs killed her or attacked her body after she had already died. The weapons charge may serve as a precursor to more serious charges depending on forensic findings.
According to a separate report, Aída was found on a Mexicali street Friday morning surrounded by at least 10 dogs. Animal Control officers seized several of the animals and captured at least one that was still roaming loose in the area.
Neighbors Describe History of Conflict
Neighbors told local reporters that the siblings had a long-running dispute. Aída regularly fed stray cats in the neighborhood, while Carlos kept multiple dogs that residents described as aggressive. Neighbors also said Aída had been attacked by the same animals on a previous occasion.
The case is the latest fatal dog attack in Mexicali, where loose and aggressive dogs have posed recurring public safety problems in residential neighborhoods. Mexicali’s municipal shelter system operates under limited budget and capacity, making community reporting of dangerous animals a key part of prevention.
Residents can report aggressive or stray animals to Mexicali’s municipal public safety offices. Anyone who encounters a dog pack is advised to avoid confrontation and contact authorities.
