Forensic investigators in Tecate are working to identify the charred remains of a young child discovered inside a suitcase on Wednesday afternoon. The body, believed to belong to a child between 5 and 6 years old, was found around 12:58 p.m. on a rural dirt road in the Colonia Nueva Hindú neighborhood, near the Tecate-Ensenada highway.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene and cordoned off the area. The degree of incineration was so severe that investigators could not visually determine the child’s sex or identity. No suspects have been named, and authorities have not established an official cause of death.
Investigation Active, No Suspects Named
The case remains under active investigation by Baja California state authorities. Forensic teams are expected to use dental records, DNA analysis, or other methods to identify the victim, given the condition of the remains.
Colonia Nueva Hindú sits on the outskirts of Tecate, a border city of roughly 110,000 people located about 35 miles southeast of downtown San Diego. The neighborhood is accessed by unpaved roads branching off the two-lane highway that connects Tecate to Ensenada, a route regularly used by tourists and expats traveling between the two cities.
Tecate-Ensenada Highway May See Disruptions
Drivers using the Tecate-Ensenada corridor, officially Highway 3, should be prepared for possible temporary disruptions near the discovery site as investigators process the scene. The highway is a common route for wine country visitors heading to the Valle de Guadalupe and for travelers avoiding the toll road between Tijuana and Ensenada.
Tecate has experienced periodic spikes in violent crime in recent years as part of broader security challenges across Baja California’s border municipalities. In 2018, the bodies of a man, woman, and child were found on a ranch in Ensenada’s Guadalupe district during a 24-hour period that saw 18 homicide victims across Tecate, Ensenada, and Tijuana.
