Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda announced new Volaris airline routes from Tijuana and Mexicali, expanding direct service to several domestic destinations beginning this spring.
Tijuana gains two new routes. Direct flights to Mérida launch June 1, with four weekly departures at 8:00 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. A Tijuana to Puerto Escondido route follows on June 2, operating three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at the same hour.
Mexicali already has two routes running. Volaris launched Mexicali to Los Cabos and Mexicali to Puerto Vallarta service on March 8. Both routes operate Thursdays and Sundays. The Los Cabos flight departs Mexicali at 1:00 p.m. The Puerto Vallarta flight departs at 1:30 p.m.
The governor also announced a 40-million-peso infrastructure upgrade at Tijuana’s international airport. The investment modernizes the landing system to cut weather-related cancellations. Fog has long disrupted departures and arrivals at the Tijuana airport, and this upgrade targets that problem directly.
For expats and frequent travelers, the new routes reduce the need to connect through Mexico City or Guadalajara to reach popular destinations. Puerto Escondido on the Oaxacan coast and Mérida in the Yucatán are both common long-stay destinations for the expat community. Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta are already top draws but now become easier to reach from Mexicali without a layover.
All routes are operated by Volaris, Mexico’s low-cost carrier. Travelers can check schedules and fares directly through the airline. The Tijuana routes open in June, so booking windows are open now.
