Tijuana’s municipal government reported that synthetic turf installation at three Fútbol 5 courts across the city has reached 70% completion. Workers are on track to finish all three projects by June.

The courts under construction are located in the Las Cascadas, Nueva Tijuana, and Parajes del Valle neighborhoods. Each site is receiving synthetic playing surfaces along with new lighting, drainage systems, perimeter fencing, and electrical upgrades.

Federal Funds Behind the Projects

The city secured federal funding for the courts through two national agencies: SEDATU (the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development) and CONADE (the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport). Both agencies channel resources to municipalities for sports and urban infrastructure projects.

Landing money from both SEDATU and CONADE is notable because it means Tijuana applied through separate federal programs. SEDATU typically funds urban improvement in underserved areas, while CONADE focuses on sports facility development.

Part of a Broader Sports Push

The Fútbol 5 courts are part of a larger sports infrastructure effort under Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz. Fútbol 5, a five-a-side format of soccer played on smaller synthetic pitches, is popular across Mexico for recreational leagues and pickup games.

For residents in these three neighborhoods, the upgrades will provide enclosed, lit playing fields suitable for evening use. Las Cascadas and Nueva Tijuana sit in the eastern part of the city, while Parajes del Valle is in the southern zone, all areas with growing residential populations that have historically lacked formal sports facilities.

The 70% completion figure refers specifically to the synthetic turf installation phase. Supporting work on lighting and drainage is proceeding alongside the turf work at each location.
