The Secretaría de Educación (Secretary of Education) office in Playas de Rosarito and the municipal government have launched a joint rescue plan to address deteriorating conditions at local public schools. The Rosarito school infrastructure initiative, announced on April 14, targets maintenance at elementary schools across the city that have suffered from chronic budget shortfalls.

Officials began direct coordination between the education office and municipal authorities to prioritize repairs at schools serving basic education levels. One of the first inspections took place at a primary school in the Colonia Lomas de Rosarito neighborhood, where crews confirmed the urgent need for synchronized maintenance work.

Budget Gaps Force Joint Action

The rescue plan comes in response to what authorities describe as a deficit in the budget allocated for educational facility upkeep. Without naming a specific dollar figure, officials acknowledged that federal and state funding has not kept pace with the maintenance needs of Rosarito’s schools. The joint approach between the city and the education office is designed to pool resources and avoid duplicated efforts.

The immediate goal is to stabilize operations at Rosarito’s school campuses for the remainder of the current academic cycle. Repairs are expected to cover structural issues, utilities, and general facility conditions, though authorities have not released a detailed list of projects or a timeline for completion.

Broader Infrastructure Challenges in Rosarito

The school rescue plan arrives as Rosarito grapples with infrastructure pressures across the board. The city’s population surged 40 percent between 2010 and 2020, reaching 126,890 residents according to census data. Rapid residential development, particularly condo construction along the coast, has strained roads, water systems, and public services.

Earlier this year, the municipal government approved a 2026 public works program focused on roads, stormwater drainage, and public spaces in neighborhoods including Plan Libertador, Lomas de Coronado, Lomas de Rosarito, and Primo Tapia. At the federal level, President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration announced a 37 billion peso (roughly $1.85 billion USD) infrastructure package for Baja California in January 2026, covering road projects and other strategic investments.

Schools, however, had not been prominently featured in those plans until now. The new rescue initiative fills a gap that parents and teachers in Rosarito have flagged for years.
