Puerto Los Cabos issued a public statement this week responding to a formal complaint from residents of La Playa, the historic fishing community east of San José del Cabo. The developer said all ongoing construction in the area is fully permitted and focused on beach restoration and coastal erosion control.
The statement came after La Playa residents raised concerns about the scope and impact of construction activity near their neighborhood. Puerto Los Cabos, a 2,000-acre master-planned development along the Sea of Cortez, said its work complies with all applicable regulations and is aimed at protecting the shoreline.
Beach Access and Erosion Control
A key point in the developer’s response was a commitment to preserving public beach access in the La Playa area. The company also outlined erosion control measures along the coastline, where wave action and storms have eaten away at the beach in recent years.
Puerto Los Cabos said it maintains public parks, sidewalks, avenues, and medians within its property. The developer also pointed to its long relationship with the La Playa community, including infrastructure built for local fishing cooperatives at the marina in 2012 and ongoing support for the La Playa Community Center, which has served more than 400 families since 2015.
Proposed Parque El Faro
The statement included details about a proposed public park called Parque El Faro, centered on the historic lighthouse at La Playa. Puerto Los Cabos said the lighthouse is classified as national maritime infrastructure under the jurisdiction of Mexico’s Navy (Secretaría de Marina). The developer confirmed it is coordinating with naval officials on questions of access and maintenance for the structure.
No timeline was given for the park proposal, and it remains unclear whether the Navy has formally approved any changes to the lighthouse site.
Tensions Between Growth and Community
The dispute fits a pattern that dates back nearly two decades. A 2007 New York Times report described Puerto Los Cabos as “this resort area’s most controversial development,” documenting tensions between large-scale construction and the traditional communities nearby. In November 2025, La Playa residents began drafting their own design guidelines to manage tourism growth without erasing the neighborhood’s fishing village character.
Puerto Los Cabos is located on Boulevard Mar de Cortez, just past the San José del Cabo estuary on the road toward the East Cape. The development includes a marina, golf courses, luxury homes, and hotel properties.
