The Los Cabos municipality will host two free recycling drop-off events this week, one in Cabo San Lucas and one in San José del Cabo. Both collection sites will operate from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The first event takes place Wednesday, May 27, at Plaza León Cota Collins in Cabo San Lucas. The second follows on Friday, May 29, at the INDEM (Instituto del Deporte) facility in San José del Cabo.
What Materials Are Accepted
Residents can bring clean plastics, paper and cardboard, metals, glass, Tetra Pak containers, expired medications, and batteries. All items should be clean and sorted before drop-off.
Organizers specified that several items will not be accepted: motor oil, toner cartridges, printers, light bulbs, and fluorescent lamps. Those materials require separate disposal channels due to hazardous waste regulations.
Part of an Ongoing Municipal Campaign
The Municipal Directorate of Environmental Education organized both events as part of a broader recycling campaign under Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez. The municipality has held similar collection drives throughout 2026, including a January 30 drop-off in San José del Cabo that also accepted special waste items.
Los Cabos does not offer curbside recycling pickup for most households. That makes periodic drop-off events the primary way for residents to divert recyclables from the landfill. The city’s Public Services recycling center, located at the Sports Center in San José del Cabo, also accepts materials on a regular schedule.
Expired Medications and Batteries
The inclusion of expired medications and batteries on the accepted list is worth noting. Both items pose environmental risks when tossed in regular trash. Expired pills can contaminate water supplies if they reach the landfill, and batteries contain heavy metals that leach into soil.
In Mexico, pharmacies sometimes accept expired medications, but collection events like these offer a more reliable option. Residents should bring medications in their original packaging when possible.
No registration or fee is required for either drop-off day. The events are open to all Los Cabos residents.
