The Port Authority of Baja California Sur (API-BCS) will build a 35 million peso (approximately $1.75 million USD) inclusive playground at the Muelle Fiscal waterfront in La Paz. Construction is scheduled from June through November 2026, and the existing play area will close during that period for safety.

API-BCS Director General Narciso Agúndez Gómez announced the project on May 24 as part of the agency’s social responsibility program. The investment comes from API-BCS operating revenues, which grew 61.9 percent between 2021 and 2025.

Two Zones, Universal Access

The renovation will transform two zones of the Muelle Fiscal into an inclusive recreation area. Plans call for universal-access infrastructure, shaded areas, walkways, new restrooms, and ride-on play equipment. The centerpiece is a themed play structure called “All Aboard,” designed so children of all abilities can play together in the same space.

The Muelle Fiscal sits along La Paz’s malecón, the seaside promenade that runs along the city’s waterfront and draws families, joggers, and visitors daily. For residents and tourists who frequent the area, the six-month closure of the current playground is worth planning around.

Broad Institutional Support Behind the Design

The project received technical input from state, municipal, and legislative officials, along with DIF (Mexico’s family welfare agency) and the state disability inclusion institute. Their participation shaped the accessibility features and inclusive design elements.

The playground project is part of broader improvements to the malecón area. Earlier work by API-BCS has included replacing damaged palm trees along medians, rehabilitating the bike lane, and maintaining several piers including the floating dock at Muelle Fiscal.

La Paz has invested in its waterfront in recent years to improve public spaces for both residents and visitors. The Muelle Fiscal, a historic pier in the center of the malecón, already serves as a gathering point with views across the Bay of La Paz toward the Mogote sandbar.

The project is expected to be completed by late November 2026. Originally reported by the Baja California Sur state government and covered by La Polaca BCS and Radar Político.
